Market lead-time signal

WoodMac survey via ACP (Q2 2025): large/HV power TF avg ~128 weeks - survey/IR planning signal, not a Switchyard Supply quote; Nikkei (Mar 2026) quoting Hitachi Energy: waits >30 months - press/interview signal, not a Switchyard Supply quote

Where an EHV class appears

A 500/230 kV unit interconnects two transmission voltages rather than feeding campus MV directly. Very large campuses and multi-site corridors see this class when the serving utility upgrades the surrounding grid as part of the interconnection agreement. The buyer of record is often the utility or a joint project entity, and the RFQ usually rides a broader interconnection scope.

Supply base is thinnest at EHV

US government reporting has flagged that import dependence rises with voltage class, and DOE's 2012 LPT study noted domestic reliance on imports is greatest for EHV units rated 345 kV and above. Fewer factories can wind, assemble, and test at 500 kV, and the test-bay schedule at those plants is itself a constraint. That is why EHV shapes carry the longest market clocks: DOE-linked hydropower addendum reporting has framed EHV units at up to about five years.

The haul plan decides feasibility

Tanks in this class sit near the top of the roughly 150 to 400 ton LPT shipping-weight range described in DOE's 2024 resilience report. Route feasibility, rail access, Schnabel car booking, and bridge ratings should be surveyed before the purchase order, because a unit that cannot reach the pad is not a procurement win. GAO's 2023 review noted transport for some moves runs to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

RFQ fields for this shape

Lock MVA per cooling stage, the 500/230 kV pair, autotransformer or two-winding construction per the study, BIL for both windings, %Z, OLTC and tap range, and the standards path. Name FAT witness rights and the shipping instrumentation in the contract. The catalog ARO band is a target confirmed on quotation and never a guaranteed OEM ship date.
